Natural teak will gradually weather to a silver gray or black color if left outdoors. You will begin to notice the “graying” after a few months, depending upon the amount of sun and rain the furniture is subject to. Total weathering will take about 6 to 8 months.
Teak furniture and decks get that gray coloring, when it’s left to its own devices. This is brought about by the natural oils and waxes of the wood reacting with the oxygen in the air. Other characteristics associated with older teak and wood is the washboard appearance. This is brought about by extensive scrubbing with harsh chemical cleaners or improperly applied pressure washing. Harsh chemicals combined with over-enthusiastic scrubbing and/or overly aggressive pressure washing will remove the softer wood leaving behind the ridges of hard wood underneath. If your furniture has these characteristics, we would suggest acquiring a professional to sand down any ridges to a smooth finish and apply a high quality teak sealer. 1. Scratches and stains can be removed with medium grit sandpaper (200-150).
2. Small cosmetic cracks, known as “checking,” may appear on the wood and are considered natural. Checking is non-structural in nature and is not to be considered a concern or defect.
3. It is more cost effective to maintain the color and look of your furniture on a regular basis, than to let the furniture turn gray and then be forced to completely restore it.
4. Furniture intended for interior use should always be sealed. The sealer will give the furniture the extra protection needed for the day to day use.
(Note: When used as indoor furniture, without constant exposure to the outside elements, teak sealers will last for years without reapplication). Proudly Servicing all of Southern California · 800-517-9362
